International team will study images, details of star, galaxy formation

An international team of researchers has launched the most sensitive telescope of its kind to be carried by a balloon, according to a June 13 press release from the University of Pennsylvania. The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Sub-millimeter Telescope (BLAST) will take a five- to nine-day journey along the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere, collecting images of objects in the solar system and the distant light that details the formation of stars and the evolution of galaxies. NASA, the Canadian Space Agency and the United KingdomÂ's Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) supported the research.
