Nokia sued for patent infringement in Finland view rss file
Finnish mobile telephone giant Nokia is being sued for infringing on a patent for technology allowing cellular phone users to answer their phones without touching them, a company backing the patent holder said.

"Nokia is infringing on a patented invention that makes it possible to answer the phone without touching it... controlling it by touching a button in the hands-free device or through voice control," said Antti Kosunen, chief executive of Anadeus, a company that advocates patent-holder rights.

First Cell Phone Was a True Brick view rss file
The brick weighed 2 pounds, offered just a half-hour of talk time for every recharging and sold for ,995. Clunky and overpriced? Not in 1984, when consumers lined up in droves to buy the first cellular phone as soon as it hit the market. And certainly not to Rudy Krolopp, lead designer of the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X.

Krolopp, now 74 and retired, still gets a "warm fuzzy feeling" thinking about the DynaTAC and knowing that "a handful of us did something that was really significant."

This brick took over a decade to get to market.

Cell Phones, Text Messaging and Google view rss file
Google has come to cellphones -- the cheap ones, not just the fancy color-screen models with Web access. Over the last month, the popular search engine company
has quietly turned on a new service that lets people use most newer cellphone models to get snippets of information by sending short text messages to a special
five-digit number, 46645, which spells GOOGL on a phone keypad.

People looking for a list of pizza or Chinese restaurants in Back Bay, for example, just have to send the message "pizza 02116" or "Chinese 02116." Within 10 seconds or so, Google shoots back one or more text messages listing restaurants with addresses and phone numbers from its Google Local page.

Creator of Prepaid Wireless Tech Wins Suit view rss file
A jury on Friday ordered a prepaid cellular phone service company and four wireless carriers to pay million in damages to a firm that patented technology and systems to provide prepaid service.

After a 12-week trial and four days of deliberations, a U.S. District Court jury ruled in favor of Phoenix-based Freedom Wireless Inc., which began patenting technology in 1994 developed by inventors Douglas Fougnies and Dan Harned.

Boston Communications Group Inc. was found liable in all the damages total because the jury found it used the patented technologies in providing prepaid services that carriers offered their customers.
